World of Warcraft - Item Upgrading
The upgrade of an item allows players to boost the gear rating of an item by up 700 points, and then give it a bonus. Items can be upgraded if they are in your inventory and you decide to take them to the Kiln.
Certain items can be upp'd to increase their stats (like an ideally rolled breakpoint armour used in melee PvP) while other items, such as weapons do not change significantly after an upgrade and thus aren't worth upgrading.
Weapons
Weapons can be upgraded to boost their numeric stats, such as crit chance, attack damage as well as PvE and PvP damage. They also have an unchanging bonus that increases the damage they deal per second. Additionally some weapons come with an added bonus that is activated when three or more of the same weapon is present on a unit. In some instances, this bonus could add up to more than the amount of damage a weapon is able to upgrade on its own.

Armor
Making a few improvements to your armor can make a an enormous difference in your ability to survive. Certain sets can offer massive increases in resistance to curses, poison and fire as well as magic. This makes it easier to traverse difficult terrains. In general, the more defense you can offer your character, the more health you can receive from each point. Therefore, it is recommended to upgrade your armor.
To improve your armor, head to one of the Great Fairy Fountains in the game. Trinkets can be re-upgraded once they're no longer useful and allows players to increase their power and value over time. They can also be traded between players which makes them an attractive alternative to gold.
In general players should upgrade their highest priority items first. This usually means the best-in-slot items for their class, followed by their secondary items and finally, other items of gear they will not be replacing in the near future (for instance, a ring or cloak). Players should also take into consideration their class's preferred stats when deciding the items to upgrade. If Haste and Crit are two of the most important stats to tank players, then they should upgrade their chest, helm and shoulders.
Trinkets can be re-upgraded to a higher level once they no longer have value, and the new trinket will receive an additional bonus of 1% for upgrading. However, a re-upgrade can cause the trinket to be destroyed until it is salvaged with the Black Lion Salvage Kit or an alternative salvage tool that is higher-end. Upgrades to trinkets can be more expensive than other upgrades but still cheaper than buying an entirely new trinket.
